Jean de Loisy appointed director of École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts amid controversy

institutional · 2026-04-20

Starting on January 5, 2019, Jean de Loisy will take the helm as the new head of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, leaving his role at the Palais de Tokyo. His appointment follows a challenging time for the school, which saw the resignations of Nicolas Bourriaud (2011–2015) and Jean-Marc Bustamante (2015–2018). Bustamante resigned in July 2018 after facing criticism for mishandling student and staff allegations of sexual harassment and racism. De Loisy's new role has sparked some discontent, with an open letter in Mediapart from November 2018 calling for changes in leadership demographics. Previously, he worked in the French ministry of culture and curated at notable venues, and he’s also set to curate the upcoming Lyon Biennale in September 2019, according to Le Monde on December 13, 2018.
