Jean Clair and Rosalind Krauss Interviewed in Artribune Magazine Issue 39
Issue 39 of Artribune Magazine, distributed from mid-September 2017, features a double interview with two giants of art criticism: Jean Clair (born Paris, 1940) and Rosalind Krauss (born Washington, 1941). Both are art historians and curators known for major studies, aesthetic theories, and innovative interpretations of 20th-century art movements. Clair, former director of the Centre Pompidou and the Musée Picasso, also directed the Venice Biennale twice, including its centenary edition. Krauss was part of Artforum's editorial board in the 1960s before founding October magazine in 1975, focusing her research on the use and reinvention of the medium by contemporary artists. In the interview, Clair polemically criticizes the contemporary art system, which he says is increasingly driven by marketing logic and lacking historical awareness. Krauss discusses her theory of the medium—the physical support of the artwork—distinguishing traditional from technical supports, and how it has been reinterpreted by artists such as Carsten Höller, Rosemarie Trockel, Bill Viola, and William Kentridge, for whom she edited a collection of essays analyzing his production.
