JD.com launches AI-powered smart helmet for delivery riders

JD.com has introduced an AI-integrated smart helmet for its food delivery couriers, following similar moves by rivals Alibaba Group Holding and Meituan. The helmet, announced on Monday by JD.com's food delivery unit, features an AI-driven voice assistant and a camera that can perceive the surrounding environment. Designed to minimize distractions in poor weather, the device allows riders to use voice commands to manage orders, communicate with customers, and perform other tasks without touching a smartphone. It also provides turn-by-turn voice prompts based on routes used by experienced riders, aiding newer workers in navigation. Additional AI features include automatically reading customer delivery instructions, such as contactless drop-off requests, and assisting with quality assurance checks, like flagging potential hygiene issues at restaurants. This rollout is part of a broader race among Chinese tech giants to enhance rider safety and improve delivery efficiency through AI technology.
