Jazsalyn's A(spora) Blends Microscopic Plant Imagery with Digital Tech on the Gullah Geechee Corridor

exhibition · 2026-04-24

Artist and researcher Jazsalyn presents A(spora), a digital art project at the John Chavis Community Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, through January 2026. Supported by SEEK Raleigh (Raleigh Arts), the work uses microscopic images of African indigenous plants like indigo and okra, transformed via collage, augmented reality, AI, and 3D simulation. The title references 'spore' in 'diaspora,' and the project is situated along the Gullah Geechee Corridor, a National Heritage Area from North Carolina to Florida. Jazsalyn defines 'Ancestral Intelligence' as pre-colonial knowledge systems passed down through generations. Her practice addresses data loss, memory restoration, and alternative futures. She teaches at The New School and is artistic director of Black Beyond, a curatorial project. Her work has been supported by Serpentine Arts Technologies, New Museum, Pioneer Works, and Creative Time, and featured in Cultured Magazine, It's Nice That, Vogue, and The New Yorker.
