Jayson Musson's Nancy-Inspired Exhibition at Salon 94 Bowery Examines Art World Satire

From May 7 to June 20, 2014, Jayson Musson presented an exhibition at Salon 94's Bowery location in New York City, exploring the comic strip Nancy through paintings and sculptures. The show featured works like Fritzi's Painting I (2014), which used Flashe acrylics and powder-coated fiberglass to reinterpret abstract paintings originally depicted in Ernie Bushmiller's comic. Musson's approach differed from earlier artists like Andy Warhol, Joe Brainard, and Mark Newgarden, who had also engaged with Nancy. While Bushmiller used the character to mock contemporary art, Musson focused on the aesthetic qualities of the comic's abstract elements, describing them in the press release as having "symmetry, balance, and economy of form." The exhibition included pieces such as Sculptural Allegory for a Specific Cultural Sphere and signs reading "ART EXHIBIT" or "ART MUSEUM ?," referencing Art Spiegelman's concept of "comix." Musson, known for his web series Art Thoughtz (2010-2012) under the persona Hennessy Youngman, previously exhibited at Salon 94 with paintings made from Coogi sweaters. The review notes that the Nancy works felt constrained, with imagery centered on the canvas, and the gallery's layout contributed to a crowded atmosphere. Despite this, the show highlighted Musson's engagement with comics as a medium, though it was seen as less impactful than his earlier satirical projects like Barack Obama Battles the Pink Robots (2009).
