institutional · 2026-04-20

Jay Sanders will become the new executive director and chief curator of Artists Space in New York, starting in April 2017. He succeeds Stefan Kalmár, who recently moved to lead London's Institute of Contemporary Art. Currently a curator at the Whitney Museum, Sanders has been with that institution since 2012, where he significantly developed its performance program through new commissions and exhibitions. Before departing the Whitney, he is expected to oversee Calder: Hypermobility, opening on 9 June. David Joselit and Eleanor Cayre, co-chairs of Artists Space's executive search committee, praised Sanders in a joint statement, highlighting his vision, energy, critical insight, and broad knowledge of contemporary art as ideal for the role.
