Jawa El Khash's Holograms Bring Don Valley Ecosystems to Life at Evergreen Brick Works
At Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto, Jawa El Khash's installation titled 'Nature's Algorithm' features four holograms that illustrate the ecosystems of the Don Valley across different timelines: past, present, and a speculative future. These holograms showcase species such as silver maple, rainbow trout, and monarch butterflies, serving as a tribute to a once-vibrant natural environment and a hopeful outlook for ecological restoration. The exhibit opens on May 3rd with a reception and will be available until December 31, 2023, at the Young Centre. Visitors can explore it for free from Thursday to Sunday between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM, and an online experience can be accessed at naturesalgorithm.xyz. Curator Charlene K. Lau emphasizes that the project envisions a flourishing ecosystem, reflecting Evergreen's aspirations. This work is part of Evergreen's Public Art Program, which engages with the site's Indigenous, cultural, ecological, and industrial narratives.
