Jason Dodge's uncompromising ready-mades at IAC Villeurbanne

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Jason Dodge (Newton, Pennsylvania, 1969) presents an exhibition of uncompromising ready-mades at the Institut d’art contemporain (IAC) in Villeurbanne, France, curated by Nathalie Ergino. The show, titled 'Behind this machine anyone with a mind who cares can enter', runs until November 6, 2016. Dodge scatters everyday waste—wrappers, fabrics, empty bottles, paper scraps, foliage, receipts—across the museum spaces, creating a marginal diary of daily life. The installation challenges viewers to shift their perception; after a while, colors and forms emerge from the seemingly random arrangement. Other works include a room with colored neon lights that are periodically changed by staff, a thermal blanket in operation, two panniers, and a mirror that turns the exhibition's end into a cul-de-sac. A scent bag in the first rooms and natural light (and rain) entering through opened skylights add sensory layers. Another part of IAC hosts the tenth stage of 'Laboratoire espace cerveau', a multidisciplinary project using artworks to explore aesthetics, social sciences, exact sciences, and transcendent practices like shamanism. Featured artists include Walter De Maria, Pierre Huyghe, James Turrell, and Matt Mullican. On November 4 and 5, two public study days with museum directors and philosophers will conclude this stage.
