Jasmine Trinca's Directorial Debut 'Marcel!' Premieres at Cannes 2022

Jasmine Trinca makes her directorial debut with 'Marcel!', a semi-autobiographical film blending tears and joy, presented at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival where she also serves as a jury member for the Official Competition. The film, co-written with Francesca Manieri, stars Alba Rohrwacher as a distracted mother and Maayane Conti as her protective daughter. Inspired by Charlie Chaplin's 'The Kid' and Fellini, the story evolved from Trinca's short film 'Being My Mum' shown at the 2020 Venice Film Festival. The narrative explores cruelty and tenderness, with a street performance at its core. Trinca, who began her acting career under Nanni Moretti in 2001, felt a long-standing urge to direct, encouraged by other female directors. Rohrwacher described the script as 'clear, simple, and deeply moving,' and she underwent movement workshops to develop her character's clumsy circus acts.
