Japanorama: Ukiyo-e Project Reimagines Classic Prints with Rock Stars
ESH Gallery in Milan will host 'JAPANORAMA. Ukiyo-e Today,' a group exhibition postponed from April due to pandemic restrictions. The show presents traditional ukiyo-e prints from the 17th to 20th centuries reinterpreted through rock icons by Ukiyo-e Project, a company founded by Yuka Mitsui, who also runs a music rights agency. Featured artists include David Bowie, whose collaboration with avant-garde designer Kansai Yamamoto inspired his Ziggy Stardust alter ego and kabuki-style costumes. Kiss members appear as kabuki actors and samurai warriors in traditional kimono with white face paint. Iron Maiden's mascot Eddie is depicted with heightened Japanese aesthetic parallels. All works preserve original Japanese master techniques.
