Japan's METI Reports Digital Camera Industry Shows Strong Recovery in 2025

According to Digicame-Info, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) has observed a resurgence in the digital camera sector. Following a prolonged downturn linked to the rise of smartphones, METI's Production Dynamics Statistics reveal that video camera production reached its highest point in 2005, while digital camera output declined after 2008. However, recent figures show that shipments of digital cameras from Japanese manufacturers have increased for the second straight year in 2025, marking the first consecutive growth in almost twenty years. This revival is largely attributed to younger users opting for dedicated cameras for social media. Notably, compact and mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras are driving this recovery. METI's findings indicate market stabilization, although sales are unlikely to return to levels seen between 2007 and 2009.
