Japan's Fruit-Shaped Bus Stops: Playful Public Works in Nagasaki

In Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, along Route 207 in Konagai, sixteen bus shelters resembling various fruits line the coastal road adjacent to the Ariake Sea. These unique structures, featuring strawberries, watermelons, melons, mandarin oranges, and tomatoes, were created in anticipation of the Journey Exposition Nagasaki 1990, with the first mikan shelter completed in 1989 near Konagai Elementary School. Crafted by Yoshitsugu Industries and Time Design Office, the shelters utilize metal lath and mortar, resembling sculptural plasterwork rather than typical street furniture. Originally, each strawberry had about 180 individually molded seeds, fashioned from empty canned-coffee containers. Over thirty years later, these shelters remain vital public assets, repainted and incorporated into local tourism, under the name Tokimeki Fruit-Shaped Bus Stop Avenue, continuing to draw photographers and visitors.
