In 2022, the Year of the Water Tiger—a 60-year astronomical cycle promising good fortune—Japan hosts four major art festivals across its regions. The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale (ETAT), one of the world's largest art festivals, runs until November 13, 2022, in Niigata Prefecture's southern region, spanning six areas (Tokamachi, Kawanishi, Nakasato, Matsushiro, Matsunoyama, Tsunan). It integrates art with rural life across some 200 villages, abandoned houses, and permanent installations. The Setouchi Triennale, themed "Still Alive," takes place on the Seto Inland Sea islands from August 5 to September 4 and September 29 to November 6, 2022, featuring artists like Yayoi Kusama and the Kinoshita Kabuki theater company across 14 venues including Megijima, Shodoshima, and Naoshima. The Reborn Art Festival runs from August 20 to October 2, 2022, on the Ishinomaki Peninsula and Sanriku coast in Miyagi Prefecture, focusing on local culture and recovery from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, with art, music, food, and nature experiences along the Michinoku Coast Trail. The Aichi Triennale, inspired by On Kawara's "I Am Still Alive" series, takes place from July 30 to October 10, 2022, at the Aichi Arts Center in Nagoya, blending new technologies with historical drama in theater, music, and dance, available both online and on-site.
