Japan House São Paulo Celebrates First Anniversary with 769,000 Visitors
Japan House São Paulo, the first global outpost of the Japanese government's cultural initiative, marked its first anniversary in early May 2017. Located on Avenida Paulista in a modern building designed by architect Kengo Kuma, the center offers free admission and aims to present contemporary Japanese culture beyond stereotypes. Under the planning and curatorial direction of Marcello Dantas, the institution has hosted eight exhibitions and 45 workshops, attracting approximately 769,000 visitors in its inaugural year. Its programming includes contemporary art exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and gastronomic events, such as a talk with a producer from the famed Studio Ghibli. A Muji store is scheduled to open on June 19, 2017. The initiative, which also has locations in Los Angeles (opened December 2017) and London (scheduled for July 2018), seeks to foster cultural exchange. President Angela Hirata noted the public's reception exceeded optimistic expectations, with the first exhibition drawing seven times the anticipated audience.
