January 2024's Most Important Archaeological Discoveries

January 2024 saw major archaeological finds globally. In Miseno, a Roman imperial villa from the 1st century AD was uncovered, along with two Doric temples at Paestum. In Ukraine, near Kyiv, a 1,000-year-old cemetery with rich grave goods including weapons, neck rings, wooden water vessels, and an altar with votive offerings was discovered by Vsevolod Ivakin and Vyacheslav Baranov of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Excavations were halted in 2022 due to war, but a report was submitted to the Archaeological Institute of America. In Kyburg, Switzerland, renovations revealed a 14th-century iron gauntlet, three looms, ceramics, iron tools, a stylus, and a key. In Taranto, Italy, E-Distribuzione S.p.A. work uncovered ceramics (6th-3rd century BC) and 4th-century BC tombs with grave goods, excavated by ETHRA Archeologia e Turismo under Annalisa Biffino. In Siberia, 8,000-year-old fortified structures at Amnya, among the world's oldest, challenge assumptions about hunter-gatherer societies, per Cambridge University Press. In County Kerry, Ireland, Billy Mag Fhloinn rediscovered a Bronze Age tomb (Altóir na Gréin) thought lost in the 1840s, along with its stones, previously known only from an 1838 sketch by Lady Chatterton.
