Jannis Kounellis's New Installations at Pesaro's Centro Arti Visive Pescheria
Jannis Kounellis, the Greek-born Arte Povera master, has created two new installations for the Centro Arti Visive Pescheria in Pesaro, curated by Ludovico Pratesi. The exhibition occupies the former Pescheria and the adjacent ex-Church of the Suffragio, recently restored to its original dodecagonal form. The installations form a single act: a circular railway track with a live horse pulling carts loaded with black coats, symbolizing a repetitive funeral for a humanity that no longer exists, referencing the centenary of World War I. In the Loggiato, another funeral scene features abandoned bodies under white sheets, with swings of black coal sacks suspended above, representing contemporary capitalism. Kounellis uses his signature materials—live horse, black coats, coal—to contrast natural and industrial elements, evoking a stalled European industrial development. The exhibition runs until October 16, 2016.
