Janis Joplin's Unpublished Scrapbook Released 50 Years After Her Death

publication · 2026-04-27

Genesis Publications is releasing a limited edition facsimile of Janis Joplin's personal scrapbook from 1966-68, titled "Scrapbook 1966-68" (working title). Only 2,000 copies will be produced, each with a property stamp. The book reproduces the original notebook along with other archival documents, interspersed with quotes and stories from friends, bandmates, musicians, writers, and photographers who knew her during those peak years. It traces her journey from early blues gigs in Austin and San Francisco cafes, to her first appearances with Big Brother and the Holding Company, and her breakthrough performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967. The scrapbook has remained unpublished until now. Joplin (Port Arthur, 1943 – Los Angeles, 1970) died at age 27, 50 years ago. The article also reflects on her legacy as a blues and rock icon, her rebellious spirit influenced by Beat poets Gary Snyder and Allen Ginsberg, and her struggles with alcohol and drugs.
