Janine von Thüngen: Sculpture Between Fashion, Theater, and Philosophy

artist · 2026-05-05

German-born sculptor Janine von Thüngen (Munich, 1964) is currently featured in two exhibitions in Italy: at Villa Foscari – La Malcontenta in Mira and at Villa Geggiano in Castelnuovo Berardenga, near Siena, as part of Art of the Treasure Hunt. In an interview with Niccolò Lucarelli for Artribune, von Thüngen discusses her artistic journey from fashion to theater to sculpture, her fascination with contrasts inspired by Heraclitus and Rilke, and her recent works inspired by the paleochristian catacombs of Rome, where she lives. She developed a new bronze casting technique with Professor Domenico Annicchiarico and her founder for the works 'Eternity I' and 'Eternity II', which explore space, time, and duality. Von Thüngen describes her relationship with Italy as a long-term marriage between two different European countries. She continues to investigate space/time questions in her ongoing work.
