Janette Beckman's 'Rebels + Icons' Exhibition at MOPOP Features Over 700 Photos

exhibition · 2026-05-04

From May 15, 2026, to September 8, 2027, Seattle's Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP) will host 'Rebels + Icons: The Photography of Janette Beckman.' This exhibition showcases over 700 images collected over four decades, featuring rare archival prints, modern collaborations, and previously unseen photos. Janette Beckman, a British documentary photographer, is known for capturing key figures in music, street culture, fashion, and activism before they gained fame. Her portfolio includes works from the 1970s British punk scene to 1980s New York hip-hop, featuring artists like Public Enemy, Salt-N-Pepa, and N.W.A. After starting her career in the UK with bands such as The Police, she relocated to New York in 1983, where her distinctive style resonated with rising hip-hop labels. The exhibition will also feature films, interactive displays, and live events. MOPOP's CEO Michele Y. Smith described it as "a living archive of cultural movements," while Chief Collections + Exhibitions Officer Jacob McMurray emphasized its extensive historical range.
