Janet Echelman's monumental light sculptures float over Milan parks

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Two monumental sculptures by American artist Janet Echelman (born 1966, Florida) are installed in Milan until September 25, 2022, as part of the SCULTURE AL VENTO project. The works, each over 30 meters long, are made from recyclable nylon and polyethylene fibers with colored lighting. They float above BAM – Biblioteca degli Alberi Milano, a contemporary park, and the center of Piazza Gae Aulenti. The initiative marks the launch of Sky Glass, Sky's first TV, and was organized by agency US UP & Below The Line. Echelman describes the pieces as part of her Earthtime series, which explores humanity's interconnection with Earth's physical systems. Her practice blends sculpture, architecture, urban design, materials science, structural engineering, aeronautics, and computer science. The sculptures interact with daylight and become a colorful spectacle at night.
