Janet Cardiff's Sonic Walks: Blurring Reality and Fiction
Since 1989, Janet Cardiff has been at the forefront of audio walks, crafting auditory experiences that confuse and captivate listeners. Participants don headphones and follow Cardiff's recorded narration, merging the actual surroundings with imaginative soundscapes. Her creations have been showcased worldwide, including venues such as Artangel in London, MoMA, Carnegie International, São Paulo Biennial, Sculpture Projects in Münster, Wanas in Sweden, and San Francisco MoMA. Collaborating with George Bures Miller, they will represent Canada at the Venice Biennale. Currently based in Berlin, Cardiff is developing an audio installation for the National Gallery of Toronto, drawing inspiration from Thomas Tallis's Spem in Alium. Additionally, she is planning a retrospective at PS1 in New York for the fall and a video walk that debuted at San Francisco MoMA in March.
