Jane Wilson's Legacy: Long Island Landscapes and Artistic Community

Jane Wilson, a prominent artist celebrated for her coastal landscape artwork inspired by Long Island, died on January 13, 2015, at the age of 90. Born in 1924 on an Iowa farm, she pursued her education at the University of Iowa, where she obtained her M.A. in painting in 1948. After marrying John Gruen, she relocated to New York City and co-founded the Hansa Gallery in 1952. In 1960, she became affiliated with the Tibor de Nagy gallery, and her painting The Open Scene was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art. Her Water Mill residence became a gathering place for artists and thinkers. Wilson presided over the National Academy from 1992 to 1994 and joined DC Moore Gallery in 1999. Her works, including Time Change (2011), embody the essence of transcendental American landscape painting.
