Jan Kopp's 'Unaussprechlich' Transforms Crestet Centre d'Art into Paper Cave

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Jan Kopp, a German artist born in 1970, showcased his installation 'Unaussprechlich' at the Crestet centre d'art in Le Crestet, France, from April 28 to June 17, 2001. After his political intervention at the Kunsthalle of Tirol in Austria, he transformed the gallery into a delicate paper cave by covering every surface with paper panels. This installation features texts, maps, diagrams, and pages from geography journals, presenting a stark contrast to the styles of Jason Rhoades and Tobias Rehberger. Kopp also displayed videos that interrogate communication, such as 'Westlich,' 'Taming the Alien,' 'Sproungwortz,' and 'Sannectamock,' where students express themselves through gestures. Carole Boulbès noted the work's ties to Dada theater and avant-garde movements.
