Jan Fabre's Naples Marriage and Art Explored in Documentary

publication · 2026-04-26

A new documentary titled "The Crown of Love. The ultimate performance" explores the deep connection between Belgian artist Jan Fabre (born 1958 in Antwerp) and Naples. Directed by Nastro d'Argento winner Giovanni Troilo, the film is set to air on Sky Arte. It is a co-production of La Compagnie des Indes with Angelos bv, produced by Ballandi. The documentary covers Fabre's wedding and his son's baptism, which he chose to celebrate in Naples Cathedral, turning them into performances blending sacred and profane elements. Last year, Fabre honored Naples with two works inspired by the cult of San Gennaro and the souls: installations Numero 85 and Eusebia, made of precious red coral. The film unfolds in three important Neapolitan places of worship: the Real Cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro, the Cappella del Pio Monte della Misericordia, and the Church of Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco, where Fabre's permanent installations dialogue with masterpieces like Caravaggio's Seven Works of Mercy. The narrative spans a single day, accompanied by the voice of actor Lino Musella reading from Fabre's Giornali notturni and theatrical texts. Curators Giacinto Di Pietrantonio and Melania Rossi appear, with a special participation by critic Achille Bonito Oliva.
