Jan Fabre's 'Ma nation: l'imagination' at Fondation Maeght
Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence hosts a solo exhibition of Belgian artist Jan Fabre, titled 'Ma nation: l'imagination', running until November 11, 2018. The show explores Fabre's recurring themes of insects, animals, everyday objects, and the brain—which he called 'the most sexy part of the body' in a 2007 Venice exhibition. Many works are executed in Carrara marble, gold, and mixed media, referencing ancient funerary sculptures and resurrection symbols. The title piece, a small brain sculpture in wood, wire, silicone, and paint, encapsulates Fabre's concept of imagination as a borderless nation. The exhibition also draws on the legacy of 19th-century French entomologist Jean Fabre, whose work on insect instinct influenced the artist. The museum's architecture, designed by Josep Lluis Sert with contributions from Braque, Matisse, Miró, Chagall, and Giacometti, provides a dramatic backdrop.
