Jan Dibbets Returns to Galleria Giorgio Persano with Abstract Photographic Works

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Jan Dibbets (Weert, 1941) presents a new cycle of works at Galleria Giorgio Persano in Turin, his first show there since 2007's Omaggio a Sol LeWitt. The exhibition features two series: NewColorStudies and B.O.U. (Miliardi di universi). NewColorStudies comprises three large-scale digital images printed on aluminum and plastic, derived from enlarging a detail of a negative that originally captured a car body. The resulting pseudo-monochromes appear as abstract fields of color and light, detached from their original context. The B.O.U. series uses the same negative detail, manipulated with digital software to create accidental abstract compositions of colors and forms, evoking imaginary maps. Dibbets' process questions what happens when an image's structure is removed, leading to abstraction, decomposition, and imbalance. The works explore photography and technology, emphasizing subjectivity and openness to new dimensions.
