James Turrell's first Skyspace in Greece opens at Amanzoe resort
James Turrell has installed his first Skyspace in Greece at the Amanzoe resort in Kranidi, Peloponnese. The site-specific work, set on a natural terrace overlooking the sea, is designed to engage with the intense Levantine light. The minimalist structure, limited to white and black, avoids superfluous ornamentation to let sunlight take center stage. Turrell expressed hope that visitors would experience serenity through the power of light. The resort, inspired by classical Greek architecture, features light-filled spaces and materials like pale concrete and white marble. Guests can also book private dinners and aperitifs inside the installation, blending art with luxury hospitality. Turrell's practice centers on light as a life-giving element and metaphor for divinity. His previous hotel-based work includes Gathered Sky at Beijing's Temple Hotel (2014). His largest project, Roden Crater, a land art observatory in Arizona's Painted Desert, has been in development since 1977.
