James Siena's Sculptural Debut at Pace Gallery Explores Technology and Material Permanence

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From March 27 to April 25, 2015, Pace Gallery in New York hosted James Siena's inaugural sculpture exhibition. The display included bronze pieces crafted at Walla Walla Foundry, bamboo sculptures, and smaller creations made from toothpicks and grape stems. Although primarily recognized as a painter, Siena ventured into sculpture two years earlier, inspired by technological advancements. He sought to produce lasting metal representations of his works from the mid-1980s. The bamboo sculptures, conceived during his residency at the American Academy in Rome, embody his painting style. The bronze works, which began in fall 2013, required five trips to Walla Walla and collaboration with foundry artisans. Unique pedestals from the estate sale of Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof were also featured. Siena intends to pursue further sculptural endeavors.
