James Gorst Architects Completes Temple Complex in Hampshire

architecture-design · 2026-04-24

In 2023, James Gorst Architects finalized a new temple complex located in Rake, Hampshire, within the South Downs National Park. The firm was chosen after a two-phase design competition held in early 2017, replacing an outdated complex from the 1970s. This new structure functions as both a temple and a community center. The project team comprises Beard Construction as the primary contractor, with Eckersley O'Callaghan handling structural engineering, McWilliam Studio overseeing landscape architecture, and Skelly & Couch managing service engineering. Additionally, Theatre Projects provided acoustics consulting, Dowsett Mayhew assisted with planning, Pacegrade worked on the timber frame, and Jackson Coles acted as project manager. Photographs were captured by Rory Gardiner, and the project was curated by Paula Pintos.
