James Casebere's 'On the Water's Edge' at Galerie Templon

exhibition · 2026-04-27

James Casebere's exhibition 'On the Water's Edge' is on view at Galerie Templon in Paris until March 7, 2020. The series presents original photographs addressing climate change and environmental disaster, envisioning hybrid architectural structures that combine public spaces and private sanctuaries. Casebere, born in Lansing in 1953, discovered photography as a child with a Brownie camera and later used his father's Fujica Rangefinder. He was influenced by artists like Robert Morris, Robert Smithson, Michael Heizer, Oldenburg, Kaprow, Warhol, and Antinova, as well as André Malraux's book 'The Museum of Museums' and Latin American magical realism. He views photography as a tool for constructing imaginary realities and questions how individuals build their worldview through memory and imagination. Casebere is not interested in documentary photography, preferring to create works from scratch. He is currently planning an architecture for the future, aiming to build a scenographic context in a real location to photograph the work in an imaginary environment.
