Jamel Shabazz's 'Sights in the City' Opens at United Photo Industries in Brooklyn

exhibition · 2026-05-05

United Photo Industries, the gallery behind the Photoville festival, is hosting 'Sights in the City' by Jamel Shabazz in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Shabazz, an African American photographer born in Brooklyn, began documenting his city at age 15 in the summer of 1980, encouraged by his father. His black-and-white street scenes, inspired by Leonard Freed, James Van Der Zee, and Gordon Parks, capture neighborhoods from Harlem to downtown Brooklyn. At the opening, Shabazz was celebrated by legendary New York photographer Louis Mendes, curator Russell Frederick of the Kamoinge collective, publicist Myrtille Beauvert, architect Loretta D'Orsogna, and graphic designer Cristina Morandin. The exhibition runs until June 17 at 16 Main Street, Brooklyn.
