Jago's Rise: Art, Marketing, and the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2025

Italian sculptor Jacopo Cardillo, known as Jago, has become a pop phenomenon through strategic self-promotion and social media, bypassing the traditional art system. His works, such as 'Marmo italiano' (2022) and 'Look Down' (2020), are placed in high-impact public spaces like Rome's Stadio Olimpico and Ponte Sant'Angelo, and have traveled to New York and the UAE. Jago's success is attributed to his marketing savvy rather than artistic innovation, drawing criticism for producing emotionally manipulative, technically proficient but conceptually shallow pieces. He has received support from figures like Vittorio Sgarbi, who included him in the 2011 Venice Biennale, and has attracted celebrities like Tim Cook and Whoopi Goldberg. In 2019, his sculpture 'The first baby' was sent to space with ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano. Jago has created versions of iconic works, including 'Il figlio velato' (2019) and a modern 'Pietà' (2022). Despite lacking institutional exhibitions, he opened the Jago Museum in Naples. He has been selected as a special guest for the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, curated by Mario Cucinella, with his installation 'Apparato circolatorio' (2017). Critics argue his work represents a populist, banal aesthetic that appeals to mass audiences but lacks depth.
