Jacqueline Poncelet and MIMA Middlesbrough Win Freelands Award; Jasmina Cibic and Anna Jermolaewa Also Honored
The Freelands Award, a £100,000 prize designated for mid-career women artists' solo exhibitions outside of London, has been awarded to Jacqueline Poncelet and MIMA Middlesbrough. Poncelet's exhibition, featuring five decades of her artistic journey, is scheduled from 7 March to 7 July 2024. Other contenders for the award included Focal Point Gallery, Hastings Contemporary, Leeds Art Gallery, Sheffield Museums, and Towner Eastbourne. Additionally, the Freelands Foundation and Art Fund have launched £50,000 grants aimed at helping UK museums acquire works from Freelands Award artists. In 2021, Jasmina Cibic was honored with the Film London Jarman Award, receiving £10,000 for her work The Gift (2019). Anna Jermolaewa was awarded the Otto Breicha Prize for Artistic Photography, which includes a €5,000 prize and a solo exhibition in 2023.
