Jacqueline Kornmüller on Ganymed Fe Male at Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Jacqueline Kornmüller, born in 1961, directs Ganymed, a project blending theater, literature, and visual arts at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, now in its fourth edition. Developed with her husband Peter Wolf, the project originated from a book by poet Mark Strand on Edward Hopper and an art audio guide experience. After her tenure as director of Schauspielhaus Hamburg, she moved to Vienna and secured support from museum director Sabine Haag. The project has won an art prize from a major Austrian bank and the Nestroy Award, Austria's highest theater honor. The 2017 edition, titled Ganymed Fe Male, focuses on feminism. Of 687 painters in the museum's inventory, only eight are women. The self-portrait of Sofonisba Anguissola dialogues with pianist Marino Formenti, who shares his childhood in a small Italian town and its impact on his perception of gender roles. Writer Zadie Smith contributed a text on a small masterpiece by Balthasar Denner, inspired by the late John Berger. Writer Anna Kim engages with Giuliano Bugiardini's 'Rape of Dina,' addressing war crimes against women during the Balkan Wars. The project also includes dancers and emphasizes non-verbal elements. Kornmüller studied with Pina Bausch in Essen and follows the motto 'art knows no boundaries' and 'everyone is an artist.' In 2015's Ganymed Dreaming, a blind 17-year-old boy narrated Brueghel's 'Spring.' The project runs until May 31, 2017.
