Jacob Hashimoto's 3,000 Kite Installation Takes Over Santa Maria della Scala

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Jacob Hashimoto, an American artist, has introduced 'Path to the Sky', a unique installation featuring 3,000 handcrafted kites, at the Santa Maria della Scala museum complex in Siena. This 17-meter-high artwork is situated in the Corticella courtyard, representing the first contemporary art display at this location, which faces Siena's Duomo. Curated by Raphaëlle Blanga, the installation embodies the link between the earthly and the celestial. Alongside this, the exhibition showcases 16 other pieces, including sculptures and digital artworks. The opening aligns with a revitalization initiative for the 36,000-square-meter area, led by Luca Molinari Studio with input from LAN Architecture, Studio Odile Decq, and Hannes Peer Architecture, aiming to convert it into a multifunctional venue. Cristiano Leone, President of the Foundation, characterized the work as art that 'consoles, watches, invokes'.
