Jacob Fabricius appointed artistic director for Busan Biennale 2020

Jacob Fabricius will lead the Busan Biennale in 2020, with the event scheduled for September. His selection was announced this week by the biennale's committee, which commended his proposal for demonstrating deep insight into Busan's history and identity. Fabricius currently directs Kunsthal Aarhus near Copenhagen, where he has pursued transdisciplinary curation, integrating literature and music. The committee highlighted his boundary-expanding concept as a key factor in his appointment. Previously, he served as associate curator at Cneai= outside Paris and held director roles at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen and Malmö Konsthall in Sweden. Fabricius founded Pork Salad Press and the Old News newspaper project and sits on the Danish Arts Foundation board. The biennale is undergoing internal reevaluation to redefine its goals and may relocate from the Busan Museum of Art. The open call sought a candidate capable of generating new art discourses amid neoliberalism and the fourth industrial revolution. His appointment comes unusually late, as the biennale has been scouting alternative venues.
