Jackson Pollock and New York School Exhibition Opens in Rome
An exhibition at the Complesso del Vittoriano in Rome presents about fifty works from the Whitney Museum of American Art, including masterpieces by Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning. Curated by David Breslin, Carrie Springer, and Luca Beatrice, and organized by Gruppo Arthemisia, the show traces the evolution of the New York School through three phases, from its pioneering roots in the 1940s to the gestural abstraction of the 1950s. Pollock's Number 27 (1947-1949), a key work featuring his dripping technique, is exhibited for the first time in Rome. The exhibition highlights the rebellious spirit of the "Irascibles," who protested the Metropolitan Museum of Art's exclusion of action painters in 1950. Female artists such as Lee Krasner and Helen Frankenthaler are also featured.
