Jack Crabtree, Figurative Painter of Miners and Steelworkers, Dies at 87

Jack Crabtree, the renowned British figurative painter celebrated for his social realism and portrayals of industrial communities, has passed away at the age of 87. A native of Rochdale, he was raised as the son of a cotton mill worker and a gasworks laborer. His artistic education commenced at Rochdale College of Art in 1955, followed by St Martin's School of Art in 1957, and the Royal Academy Schools from 1959 to 1961. In 1974, he spent a year in the south Wales coalfields, creating 119 sketches and paintings of miners. Crabtree became the first Ruhr arts fellowship recipient in 1977, documenting Germany's coal and steel industries. He was a professor at the University of Ulster from 1984 for ten years, where he captured the resilience of Belfast during the Troubles. In 1991, as an artist-in-residence for the National Trust, he documented traditional processes at Patterson's Spade Mill in Templepatrick, Northern Ireland. Crabtree married Mary Ellis in 1962, with whom he had two sons; she passed away in the late 1960s. After retiring to Nantlle, north Wales, in 1994, he transformed his loft into a studio and continued to create art despite losing his sight. His works are part of collections in Britain, Northern Ireland, and Germany. He is survived by his sons, Tom and the author of this obituary.
