Iziko Museums' Director Contract Not Renewed Amid Political Tensions and Cape Town Exhibitions

institutional · 2026-04-20

Iziko Museums, the umbrella organization for Cape Town's government-run museums, allowed the contract of Riason Naidoo, director of its art collections, to expire without renewal and without appointing a successor. The decision sparked debate on social media, with some supporting Iziko's move and others questioning it, while race remained an underlying issue. Iziko Museums obtained a court injunction to prevent Naidoo from commenting further to the media. Concurrently, several exhibitions opened in Cape Town. At Stevenson, Anton Kannemeyer, a well-known South African cartoonist and satirist, exhibited alongside photographer Daniel Naudé, with Tim Leibbrandt questioning the effectiveness of satire in South African art and the potential confusion between their works. At blank projects, Zimbabwean painter Misheck Masamvu presented his exhibition Life Sentence, showcasing his disquieting talent and technical skill that places him above many South African artists. At Goodman Gallery, the group exhibition Surfacing coincided with a visit from a Tate committee and featured works by artists like Candice Breitz and Haroon Gunn-Salie, but was criticized as wayward and confusing, with a thematic center referencing Sartre and Frantz Fanon's ideas on political violence. The events occurred in May/June 2014, following South African elections, and highlighted political wrangling in the art world.
