Ivrea Named Italian Book Capital 2022
Ivrea, a city in Piedmont, has been awarded the title of Capitale Italiana del Libro 2022. The announcement was made during a press conference attended by Culture Minister Dario Franceschini and Marino Sinibaldi, president of the Centro per il libro e la lettura and head of the jury. Ivrea was selected from seven other finalists: Aliano, Barletta, Costa di Rovigo, Nola, Pistoia, Pescara, and Pordenone. The jury praised Ivrea's ability to network local energies, its international outlook, and its vision of book culture that leverages the city's cultural and technological heritage without provincial pride. The winning city receives €500,000 in funding for project implementation. The title, established by Franceschini in 2020 under Law No. 15 of February 13, 2020, is awarded annually to cities promoting reading. Previous winners include Chiari (2020) and Vibo Valentia (2021). The initiative parallels the UNESCO World Book Capital, which has only once been awarded to an Italian city: Turin in 2006.
