Iván Navarro's 'Planetarium' Illuminates Centquatre Paris

exhibition · 2026-04-24

Iván Navarro's exhibition 'Planetarium' at Centquatre Paris features over twenty light installations in the former stables, running until February 28, 2021, pending reopening. The show is complemented by a concurrent exhibition at Galerie Templon in Paris, open from January 30 to March 20, 2021. Navarro, who grew up in Santiago under Pinochet's dictatorship, uses fluorescent tubes, mirrors, and one-way mirrors to create sculptures that blend Minimalism and Op Art. Key works include 'Homeless Lamp, the Juicer Succer' (mid-2000s), a shopping cart of white fluorescent tubes referencing illegal electricity hookups; 'Murio La Verdad' (2014), a tribute to Josef Albers; 'Sentinel (Rouge)' (2010), a door-like installation creating an infinite corridor; 'Death Row' (2006), representing Chile at the 2009 Venice Biennale; 'Bed' (2009), a bed with mirrored letters B, E, D; 'Street Lamp (Yellow Bench)' (2012), a luminous bench; and 'Emergency Ladder' (2018), a red ladder symbolizing urgency and migration. The works explore power, illusion, and social commentary, often using text and perspective to challenge perception.
