Ithra's Audience-Curated Exhibition at Islamic Arts Biennale

exhibition · 2026-04-22

The 2023 Islamic Arts Biennale in Jeddah features 'A Journey of Understanding,' an exhibition organized by the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) and shaped by insights from a 2016 audience research study. This study, a collaboration with the University of Dammam, gathered opinions from potential audiences in Dammam, Riyadh, and Jeddah regarding their relationship with Islamic culture through art. Included in the biennale's AlMadr section, the exhibition showcases pieces from 12 institutions, such as the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art in Athens and Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah in Kuwait City. Curator Idries Trevathan highlights that participants acted as curators, influencing museum exhibitions. The biennale continues until 23 May 2023.
