Itaú Cultural Launches Brazil Cinema Now! Showcase Featuring Award-Winning Luso-Brazilian Film
Itaú Cultural presents the Brazil Cinema Now! showcase on its website, featuring four films representing contemporary Brazilian audiovisual power. The selection, curated by Francesca Azzi of Zeta Filmes, runs until August 1st. The centerpiece is the Luso-Brazilian film 'Chuva é Cantoria na Aldeia dos Mortos' (The Dead and the Others), directed by Renée Nader Messora and João Salaviza. The film premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Un Certain Regard award, and was also selected for competitions at the São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro festivals that same year. The narrative follows Ihjãc, a 15-year-old Krahô indigenous boy who must perform his father's funeral rite but is unprepared to sever the bond. The film blends poetic and ethnographic approaches, with sound design by Vitor Aratanha and Krahô language translation handled by Aratanha and Amxykwyj. The other films in the free online program are 'Arábia' (2017) by Affonso Uchôa and João Dumans, 'Azougue Nazaré' (2018) by Tiago Melo, and 'Inferninho' (2018) by Guto Parente and Pedro Diógenes.
