Italy to Create 17 New Autonomous Museums Under Sangiuliano Reform
Under the leadership of Gennaro Sangiuliano, Italy's Ministry of Culture has put forth a proposal aimed at expanding the number of state museums with special autonomy from 44 to 60. The draft decree outlines the establishment of 17 new autonomous museums, which include the Royal Residences of Savoy and the National Archaeological Museums of Venice and the Lagoon, among others from different regions. Additionally, three current autonomous museums will be elevated to first-tier status: the Royal Museums of Turin, the merging of the Accademia Gallery and Bargello Museums of Florence, and the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. This reform received preliminary approval from the Council of Ministers on July 26, 2023. Sangiuliano highlighted that increased autonomy will improve management and acknowledge the cultural importance of these locations.
