Italy Suspends Schengen Travel Pact with Spain Over Ceuta Migrant Crisis

On Friday, Italy declared a one-month suspension of the EU's Schengen agreement with Spain, prompted by a surge of migrants arriving in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. This suspension will necessitate that travelers present their passports for air and sea journeys between the two nations. Additionally, Italy's interior ministry has partnered with France to enhance border controls along the Franco-Italian land border to deter undocumented crossings. Critics of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's right-wing administration have labeled the action as merely symbolic, aimed at domestic political gain, especially since there is no indication that migrants in Ceuta plan to travel to Italy. This decision followed Spain's report that most of the over 50,000 migrants who crossed back voluntarily. Meloni's coalition, in power since 2022, is under pressure from a far-right party led by former general Roberto Vannacci, whose anti-migrant stance appeals to certain voters.
