Italy Suspends Free Museum Sundays Due to COVID-19 Surge
Italy's Ministry of Health has suspended the popular free admission Sundays at state museums, effective immediately, due to rising COVID-19 infections. The ordinance, published in the Official Gazette on September 26, 2020, follows a request from the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (MiBACT) to reduce crowding risks. The initiative, launched in 2014 by then-Minister Dario Franceschini, had significantly boosted museum attendance and revenue. Paid visitors increased from 17.6 million in 2013 to 24 million in 2017 (+37%), while total revenue rose from €40.7 million in 2013 to €48.6 million in 2017. Despite a brief challenge in 2018 by former Culture Minister Alberto Bonisoli, the program continued and expanded. The suspension marks a setback for one of Italy's most successful cultural policies, as the government prioritizes public health amid the pandemic.
