Italy signs agreement to preserve historic hospitals in Lazio as cultural heritage
The Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC) and the Lazio Region have signed an agreement to protect, study, and enhance the cultural heritage of historic hospitals in the region. The accord covers three major hospital complexes in Rome: Santo Spirito in Sassia (founded 727), San Giovanni Addolorata (1216), and San Gallicano (1725). These sites contain archaeological remains and artworks, including the Corsia Sistina frescoed hall at Santo Spirito, attributed to Andrea Palladio, and ancient Roman ruins such as the horti of Agrippina Maior. The agreement aims to improve accessibility, create new visitor routes, and adapt spaces for museum and exhibition purposes while maintaining healthcare functions. Superintendente Speciale di Roma Daniela Porro emphasized enhancing knowledge and accessibility of these "jewels of our city." Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini stated the protocol sets a path for other regions facing similar challenges in balancing hospital use with heritage preservation.
