Italy's Ministry of Culture unveils 2024-2026 Strategic Plan for Photography

Italy's Ministry of Culture (MiC) presented its Strategic Plan for the Development of Photography 2024-2026 on April 29, 2024, alongside the public notice Strategia Fotografia 2024. The plan, first launched in 2018 under Minister Franceschini, aims to elevate photography as a key component of contemporary art and Italian creativity. It is divided into two main areas: knowledge and conservation of the national photographic heritage, and support for the Italian photographic sector in its artistic and professional dimensions. Priorities include expanding photographic collections, fostering contemporary artistic creation, internationalization, professional training, and promoting Italy's image abroad. The public notice Strategia Fotografia 2024, now in its fourth edition, has a record budget of €2.7 million—the highest ever allocated—compared to a total of €4,278,895 across the previous three editions. Funds are earmarked for acquisitions and commissions (€1.4 million), promotion (€800,000), and talent development (€500,000). Eligible applicants include museums, cultural institutions, universities, foundations, associations, and individual photographers, artists, curators, critics, and researchers. The deadline for applications is June 28, 2024. Key officials involved include Undersecretary for Culture Lucia Borgonzoni, Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano, and Director General for Contemporary Creativity Angelo Piero Cappello.
