Italy's Ministry of Culture launches €271,772 fund for contemporary art acquisitions

The Italian Ministry of Culture, through its Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity, has issued a circular establishing criteria for acquiring contemporary artworks for state museums and cultural sites. A total of €271,772.20 is allocated for 2026. The fund targets state institutes with existing contemporary art collections and structured programming, aiming to fill historical gaps in public collections and support contemporary creativity. Proposals may cover artworks created in the last seventy years by national or international artists, living or deceased, of significant cultural interest. Funding can cover up to 100% of costs, including taxes and ancillary expenses like transport, insurance, inventory, and installation, but excludes production costs and promotional activities. Applications must be submitted via certified email by January 12, 2026. A commission appointed by the Directorate General will evaluate proposals, with up to 80% advance payment and final balance after reporting and acquisition.
