Italy's Legality Day: Remembering the Capaci Massacre with #eranosemi
On May 23, Italy observes the Giornata della Legalità, commemorating the Capaci massacre in which anti-Mafia magistrate Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo, and police officers Vito Schifani, Rocco Dicillo, and Antonio Montinaro were killed. The day calls for displaying white sheets on balconies as a symbol of unity, as public gatherings are restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The hashtag #eranosemi, launched by WikiMafia in collaboration with Fondazione Falcone, MIUR, and Libera, emphasizes that these figures were 'seeds' of justice. WikiMafia, founded in 2012 and based in Milan, is Italy's first encyclopedia and map dedicated to the Mafia. From May 18 to 23, it organized the online program 'Il Paese di Falcone' for the 28th anniversary of the attack, featuring lectures by Nando Dalla Chiesa, testimonies from journalists Riccardo Orioles and Attilio Bolzoni, and a live broadcast from the Giardino della Memoria in Capaci and the Falcone Tree in Palermo. Participants included Maria Falcone, Tina Montinaro, Palermo mayor Leoluca Orlando, and Pif, with a musical opening by Stadio. A flash mob of white sheets across Italy concluded the event at 6 PM.
